BACKGROUND
Malawi Savings Bank Limited was incorporated as Limited liability company in June, 1994 and granted a Banking licence in 1995. This was after it had operated as a Government Savings Department for some time. There was a need to elevate the Department to an independent Bank. This decision was made in order to afford the Bank the opportunity to grow. Indeed today, the Bank has grown and introduced a big number of products and services.

The Bank exercises independent decisions away from Government as reflected in the composition of its Board of Directors who are mainly from the private sector(two accountants, one administrator, one human resource specialist and one social scientists).

The Bank currently has 180 employees with 3 branches and 35 agencies situated in strategic locations throughout Malawi.

SHAREHOLDING
The Bank is owned 100% by Malawi Government although preliminary work has started which is looking at the possibility for Government to divest out under the on going privatisation programme.
