First Merchant Bank Limited (popularly known as FMB) is the first private sector commercial bank to be licensed in Malawi. FMB was incorporated on the 13th November 1994 and opened to the public on the 26th June 1995. FMB currently operates out of 7 branches and 5 Agencies countrywide. These are in Blantyre (also Head Office), Limbe, Lilongwe, Capital City, Mzuzu, Zomba, First Corporate Services Branch in Blantyre, Chichiri Agency at Chichiri Shopping Mall in Blantyre, Crossroads Agency at Crossroads Shopping Mall in Lilongwe, Dwangwa Agency within the Illovo Factory, Limbe Auction Floors and Kanengo Auction Floors .
FMB has enjoyed rapid growth since inception and was voted 'Bank of the Year - Malawi 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 Euromoney Award by Banker Magazine (a subsidiary of the Financial Times).
FMB is primarily a commercial bank and provides all related banking services but with several additional products unique to the Malawi market. These include interest on current account credit balances, savings accounts with a cheque book facility and portfolio management.
The bank is open for business from Monday to Friday (8.00am to 3.00pm) and Saturdays (8.30am to 11.00am).
ATM facilities are available throughout Malawi whilst travelers cheques in all major currencies can be purchased if traveling abroad. FMB enjoys correspondent bank relationships with major banks worldwide i.e. Citibank, ABSA (South Africa) and ICICI Bank Ltd to name but a few.
